Lately I’ve been working on a bunch of new custom Portland Pin designs. The pin company I run has always been kind of a side project where I sell pins made from submitted art by tons of people out of bubble gun type machines for .25-.50 cents! This is still very much happening but I wanted to try something new with this project and make pins where people wouldn’t have to rely on getting a random button out of a machine. You can now purchase any of these buttons at the store Pinecone+Chickadee in Portland, ME for $1 each! I’m also working on putting together small pin packs of certain buttons that will eventually be for sale on my Etsy page and at craft fairs that i do. These will be made in very small quantity. I’ll also be changing up the designs available frequently. So if your interested in any of these designs either stop into the shop or email me directly at krisgjohnsen@gmail.com and we’ll make it happen!

The last few months I’ve found a new love of Instant photography, I think it has to do with all these camera phone apps taking over the world. Though I do take tons of pictures on my phone and really love Instagram, “if you use it wisely people”. I’ve recently bought a few vintage Polaroid cameras, all made within the 1960′s and 70′s. Though Polaroid does not make film anymore, Fuji Film makes pack film for all of them, I’ve recently acquired 4 Land Cameras and just now a Polaroid Passport id camera. I’ve just begun to play with this thing but it’s pretty awesome so far! Pictures of it are at the bottom. Taken with my iphone, go figure.
I love the resurgence of these cameras, they were made to last! If you find a Land Camera and it’s atleast been somewhat taken care of then it’s bound to still work. You can’t say that for many products being made today. I just had this conversation with my mom about DVD player’s only having a certain lifespan, I bet you can’t find one of those around that would last for 10 years, let along 50! The whole resurgence does fit along with the whole Mad Men phenomenon, but I can see why. That generation was a generation of style, the beginning of a lot of products and the machine age taking over in a way. The Polaroid Company’s heyday was the 1960′s.
Well so far I have only explored taking normal pictures with these guys. Lot’s of trips to the dog park, pictures of the Eastern Prom in Portland and pictures of tree’s have taken up most of the shots. also a ton of blank white pictures from trial and error trying to get some of them to work. But I think that’s kind of fun, these are simple but not as simple as the iphone apps. You need to think about your picture taking a bit more.
You can follow me on Instagram here.
Above picture is taken with the Passport camera with the dividers taken out to blend all 4 of the pictures it takes together.
Above is one of my Polaroid 100 Land Cameras.
This is the beast. Passport id photo camera.
