Next First Friday is not very far away and it’s already looking to be a good one, Whitney Art Works is having a show totally devoted to “The Funnies” with illustrators, graphic artists and painters in the mix.
Ryan Lamunyon, a recent graduate of Maine College of Art with a BFA in Illustration is one of the featured artists. His graphic work is detailed with very thought out line work and stories incorporated in his pieces, sometimes colored in digitally but seems to really shine in his combination of hand drawn imagery and water colors. Here is a sneak peek at what he’s working on for the show, which is February 6th at the Whitney.

New Poster for Neon Garden for an Event at the White Heart for next First Friday. Another really bright print, which I’ve found it is really fun to do, I guess its just more fun than printing straight black. This poster is 11-17inches and is a run of 40, should see then around town sometime soon.

Fucked Up, a punk/hardcore band from Canada on Madador Records, played SPACE Gallery the other night for an amazing show, and one not to forget anytime soon. It brought alot of people that you might not usually see at SPACE which was great, and turned out to be a packed night even with the huge snow storm the day before and day of the show. Here are some shots from the night that I took. More Photos at the SPACE Gallery blog by Bryan Bruchman

whitneyWhitney Art Works Presents The Funnies, an exhibition co-curated by Deborah Whitney, Jeff Badger, and Elianna Mesaikos. The exhibition will be on view from February 4th- February 28th. A reception for the artists will be held on February 6th 5-8pm during the First Friday Art Walk.

This show sounds really interesting, and something you might not usually see in a Gallery setting, atleast that’s what I’m hoping for. This show features some great artists, alot who I actually know personally. Here’s the full list Ben Asselin, Jeff Badger, Nick Colen, Jay Cornell, Pat Corrigan, Amanda Curreri, Haig Demarjian, Sean Foley, Mike Gorman, Sam Henderson, Charlie Hewitt, Graham Kahler, Victor Kerlow, David Kish, Ryan LaMunyon, Amy Morken, Michael Nakoneczny, Deb Randall, Alex Rheault, Martin Shields, Irene Stapleford, Tyler Stiene, Aaron Tompkins, Chad Verrill, Ty Williams, and Henry Wolyniec.

I will definetly be documenting this show a bit, so look in later for some pictures from the First Friday Opening!

Arms and Sleepers is an experimental type band from Boston Mass. They blend live drums with really good beats, which make great music to chill out to. Most live videos I’ve seen of theirs have some type of projection on them as they play, mostly looking like found imagery/video and very moody looking videos that could either make sense or not, but either way go really well with the music. Here’s a video of theirs that i think is really great! Should be an amazing show!

The bill included The Baltic Sea, Arms and Sleepers and Hadoken

The show is January 30th at SPACE in portland.

Fucked Up is a hardcore/punk band from Toronto, Canada. I’ve recently gotten into them and cant wait for the show at SPACE Gallery on the 18th of January. Should be a different kind of show for SPACE than they usually have, but a good time either way. I really hope everyone comes out for this!
Here’s a video I found while doing alittle research on them, pretty intense performance in a bathroom, dudes playing drums next to a urinal!

Fucked Up also just did a session at Daytrotter.com where you can download the whole session!

The Portland Museum of Art is having a new show featuring music photography coming up. I heard Phantom Buffalo will be playing in the museum as well as some sort of connection with SPACE Gallery, more on this later. Should be fun though!
